Faculty Statement: Sara Louise Lazarus

Last night and tonight I looked at my screen and saw the faces of so many of you whom I’ve taught, whom I love, and whom I’ve loved teaching. After reading your posts and hearing your words, I realize it’s time for you to teach me

The process has begun.

The “Resources for Teachers” you have sent has been invaluable for me to read.  Thank you for the links.

My goal has always been to see you as individuals and to create a safe class and rehearsal space.  I apologize for any times this might not have been true for you, or when my words and actions, or inaction, may have hurt or harmed you.

I’ve already been doing much self-reflection about my white “privilege” and the way it impacts my classroom.

I welcome all the equity, diversity and inclusion training seminars being planned at Circle and beyond.

I am in conversation with other teachers about what they and their schools are doing to support their diverse communities.

Because what I teach is more “nuts and bolts” than most of your classes (aside from your Pro Or’s) and I want to help you develop the tools to find work in this most difficult of businesses, I’ve been using this time of Covid to take online seminars with a variety of theatres, organizations and casting directors about this changing world, and changing audition world.

Most importantly, I want to hear from and create a dialogue with you—individually or in small groups—so I can take in your thoughts and ideas for how I can move forward teaching my classes to create a safe yet challenging environment with the richest curriculum possible.   Please feel free to be in touch with me.

I’ve heard you, and I’m ready to engage, to listen and to learn.

With respect,

Sara
