To the students and alumni of Circle in the Square Theatre School,
We see you and we hear you. We recognize the abhorrent behavior brought on by this institution under the pretense of education. We come together as a collective to publicly recognize the recklessness of this institution’s directors and their contributions to systemic racism, gender inequality, ableism, and cultural insensitivity. These are pressing matters that continue to afflict our theater industry as a whole and are rooted in educational programs and training spaces. In today’s social climate, it is more imperative than ever that we speak up about these many forms of abuse from a school that promises—and yet has failed—to protect, uplift, support, and prepare us for life as actors on and off stage.
Our intention is to hold Circle in the Square Theatre School accountable for the hurt that they have caused their students and alumni. We know this institution categorizes and attempts to decide for students their places and “types” in the industry without encouraging further conversations on the perpetuation of stereotypes. This is an abuse of power.
We come as individuals into the program—unique entities who have particular needs. To meet these needs, the program must offer the accommodations necessary to cultivate an environment conducive to providing a helpful and safe space to learn. Circle has long since disregarded and neglected the mental and physical health of their students. Not only does the school fail to recognize and address its students’ needs; the program also deems these needs as reasons for students’ ineligibility to continue in the program. Physical and mental conditions, visible or not, should not be denied by faculty and staff. Those who have been affected by this negligence deserve to be seen and respected.
We want to amplify the voices of those who have been silenced and have felt apprehensive in expressing themselves. We have compiled a list of demands here, and are willing to listen as well as discuss amendments to what has been written thus far. We have provided a safe space for those who wish to share any stories and experiences in order to hold this institution accountable for their indiscretions. We encourage you to speak up, and we will protect your anonymity should you choose to remain unnamed.
We are committed to holding all institutions accountable for cultivating and maintaining a safe and equitable space for all actors—regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religious background, pre-existing conditions, and all other attributes. We pledge to push for the efficient and effective transformation of the theater industry to provide an inclusive space of expression for artists of all types, starting with the schools that train these actors.
We know how difficult it is to speak about these incidents, and we thank those who have already participated in sharing their truths. We admire your bravery. As stated in the Actor’s Vow, “I will work on it. I will raise my voice. I will be heard.” We are raising our voices. We demand to be heard. These are our stories. Amplify your voice.
In solidarity,
