Faculty Statement: Elizabeth Loughran

I'm Elizabeth Loughran, and I use she/her pronouns. I teach 1st year Speech.

Thank you to those who have worked so hard for this conversation to finally occur. Thank you for the brave words of those who shared. And thank you Whit, for your wise and patient help here.

I was horrified by much of what I heard last night.  My SpeechMom heart was aching for my students.

I have always respected my students, their backgrounds, cultures, & experiences and will continue to do so.  I’m willing to listen and work towards solutions to further needs for their well-being.

I’m willing to institute changes in my syllabus to provide more inclusion, and I’m open to suggestions.

Since this COI began, I’ve been contacted by some graduates, particularly BIPOC and LGBTQ, with their concerns, and to tell me that, amid other injustices they may have suffered at school, I created a safe haven for them at [0] That, I hope, can continue. Safety is imperative!

Thank you, also for the recommendations given for further speech study. Some I am familiar with, and the others I look forward to reviewing. I’m sorry that you find SWD racist, and I hear you.

I hope that the kinds of experiences I heard about last night will never need to be endured by future acting students at [0].

Thank you very much.
